Urgent Attention Needed in Galmudug
The lifting of the arms embargo in Somalia has resulted in a dangerous situation in the Galmudug region. The influx of weapons into the country has led to an escalation of inter clan fighting, posing a significant threat to the safety and security of the residents.
Baraawe Human Rights Protection calls upon the UN Security Council Army Embargo Committees to review the Somali Army Embargo and take immediate action to prevent clans from arming themselves for inter clan battles. The situation is critical, with clashes already occurring in various parts of Somalia, including Diinsoor, Qoryooley, Baraawe, Afgooye, Cabdudwaq, Berdaale, Gedo and many unreported areas.
A recent incident involving the transportation of a large cache of weapons has further exacerbated the conflict in Galmudug. This incident, which resulted in the loss of lives, has raised concerns about the origin and purpose of these arms. It is crucial to address the motives behind these purchases and their potential impact on regional stability.
The ongoing clashes between clans in the area have complicated the situation even further. Despite 33 years of conflict, some individuals still resort to firearms to settle disputes, perpetuating a cycle of violence and fear.
To break this cycle, it is essential to deescalate the violence and promote peaceful resolutions. Dialogue, mediation, and diplomacy must be prioritized to ensure the safety and well-being of Galmudug residents.
The international community must also play a role in addressing this critical situation. Monitoring and regulating the flow of weapons into the country is crucial, as is supporting initiatives that promote peacebuilding, reconciliation, and the strengthening of institutions in Galmudug.
Together, we can work towards a peaceful and stable Galmudug, where the lives and aspirations of its people are protected and nurtured. Let us unite and advocate for peace, understanding, and a collective effort to bring an end to the violence in the region. 🌍✌️ #GalmudugConflict #PeaceForGalmudug
