To the Somali National Army Commander and Somalia Government
Baraawe Human Rights Protection stands firmly in condemning the recent ambush that tragically claimed the lives of four soldiers from the Geledi clan within the Somali National Army: Fu’ad Ali Mayow, Qaalid Muhudin Warabe, Anwar Ibrahim Yusuf, and Cataroow. This heartbreaking incident underscores the urgent need for justice in Afgooye, where the community faces ongoing violence, leaving residents in a state of fear and instability. These soldiers were not only military personnel; they were essential members of our community, and their loss is deeply felt.
Reports indicate that the attack was executed by soldiers from the Gaashaan groups in Mogadishu, raising serious concerns about loyalty and trust within our military ranks. The involvement of an outsider among the attackers adds a troubling complexity, suggesting possible external motivations. Furthermore, the incident has resulted in civilian casualties, deepening the community’s vulnerabilities.
Our thoughts and prayers are also with Mohamed Umar, who was injured during this horrific event, and for the three innocent civilians—Aweys Abukar Balile, Seyd Ali Sharif, and Abdukadir Afey—who have been unjustly detained in Mogadishu’s Habar Qadijo center.
Local organizations, alongside elders and women’s groups, are coming together to demand accountability and justice. Their protests reflect a growing frustration with the escalating violence and perceived inaction of our leaders. The potential for targeted violence against the Geledi clan is alarming, threatening to ignite further ethnic tensions and unrest.
Moreover, lawlessness in Afgooye is worsened by bandits, reportedly linked to the Southwest state daraawish, who are extorting residents and travelers. Their suspected collaboration with Al-Shabaab poses a significant threat to public safety and stability.
The Dooy Shabele State Regional Government has condemned these killings and is calling for immediate action to restore order. The people of Afgooye remain resolute in their quest for justice, striving for a safer environment for all. Together, we advocate for accountability and a peaceful resolution to the turmoil, emphasizing solidarity and resilience in these challenging times.
