Subject: Urgent Plea for Justice for Muna Ibrahim Abikar captive and held in prison for 4 years without court found proven guilty

Dear Friends

Baraawe Human Rights Protection is deeply troubled by the grave violation of human rights in Somalia’s judicial system. We bring to your attention the unjust imprisonment of Muna Ibrahim Abikar, who has been held captive without any court sentence or evidence for the past four years.

This blatant disregard for the rule of law is unacceptable and requires your immediate attention. Muna’s arrest was orchestrated by Dahir Sheikh Ahmed, the brother of former Somali president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, without any substantiated evidence of Muna possessing his $500,000 US dollars.

This prolonged detention without due process violates the principles enshrined in Article 34 of the Somali Federal Constitution, guaranteeing the right to a fair public hearing by an independent and impartial court within a reasonable time. Additionally, Article 35 of the Somali Federal Constitution clearly states that an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a final manner by a court of law.

The imprisonment of Muna also violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as she has been held in jail for four years without being proven guilty in a court of law.

It is unlawful to hold someone in prison for such a prolonged period without a fair public trial.

Reliable information suggests that Muna’s arrest came after she rejected Dahir Sheikh Ahmed’s marriage proposal.

The Digil elders, Muna’s family, and Baraawe Human Rights Protection, implore you, President Hasan Sheikh, and the Somali federal government to take immediate action to rectify this grave injustice and secure the release of Muna Ibrahim Abikar.

We vehemently condemn this unjust four-year imprisonment without a fair trial and demand justice and the immediate release of Muna Ibrahim Abikar.

We call upon Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to intervene in this case and ensure the protection of Muna Ibrahim Abikar’s rights.

Together, let us stand against such violations and work towards ensuring fairness prevails in Somalia’s judicial system. We urge you to join us in demanding the fair treatment of individuals and seeking justice for Muna Ibrahim Abikar.

Muna Ibrahim Abikar, a former member of the Somali Federal Parliament, deserves justice and the opportunity to prove her innocence.

Please use the hashtags #JusticeForMuna and #SomaliaStrong to support this cause.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.

We trust in your commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice for all.

Sincerely,

Zahra M Omar
