Dear SGBV Service Providers,
I must urgently bring to your attention a harrowing incident that occurred on September 25, 2024, in Diinsoor. A 13-year-old survivor has been subjected to the horrific acts of molestation and rape by a staff member of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), as reported by Baraawe Human Rights Protection.
This tragedy is further compounded by severe systemic failures within the judicial system of Southwest State, Somalia. The suspect was arrested but shockingly released the same night after allegedly bribing local officials, including the District Commissioner. This blatant corruption undermines justice and highlights the challenges survivors face.
Moreover, the community’s lack of adequate medical facilities, worsened by Al-Shabaab’s restrictions, severely hampers the survivor’s access to essential healthcare. Immediate medical attention is crucial to prevent potential health complications.
We are urgently calling for support for the survivor’s medical investigations and her safe relocation for psychological recovery. Her family implores the Somali government and NRC to take responsibility and provide the necessary assistance.
Baraawe Human Rights Protection stands in solidarity with the survivor and her family, advocating for justice and medical care. We have referred this case to NRC investigators for a thorough follow-up, with the consent of the survivor’s family.
Thank you to the Norwegian Refugee Council for your continued support in this critical matter.
Let us unite in the pursuit of justice and ensure the well-being of survivors in our communities.
Sincerely,
Zahra Omar
Vice President
Baraawe Human Rights Protection
